Inspired by the manmade nature and sense of alienation the artist experienced in Hong Kong, Cheng's multidisciplinary practice recurringly reveals the complex of light, shapes, and spaces.

Cheng Hung (Dony Cheng) lives and works in Hong Kong. She is a recipient of the 19th Hong Kong Arts Development Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) (2025) and a studio grant at HART Haus.

Elaboration of the Lights
12 Feb– 12 Mar, 2022
Gallery Exit, Hong Kong
In this exhibition, Dony Cheng Hung explores the ever-shifting relationship between light, space, and time within the urban landscape.

Drawing from daily observations, Cheng transforms familiar city elements into abstracted, dematerialised compositions using soft pastel, charcoal, acrylic, and ink. Her works reconstruct light not only as a visual phenomenon but as a symbolic and spatial force. Refracted glows, imagined illuminations, and dreamlike landscapes unravel the boundaries between the material and immaterial. Incorporating video for the first time, Cheng deepens her investigation into temporality—where synthetic light and shadow continuously loop, shimmer, and evolve.
